Hackney bakeries and coffee shops worth getting up for

Sourdough under railway arches, serious pastries by Victoria Park and a roastery where the machinery is part of the room.

Hackney's best cafés are not interchangeable laptop rooms. One mills heritage grain, one runs a youth training programme, one laminates pastry into cult-level shapes, and one lets you watch coffee being roasted while you drink it. This is a route from London Fields to Dalston, Victoria Park and Stoke Newington for mornings when breakfast is the plan rather than an obstacle.

e5 Bakehouse, Mentmore Terrace

e5 Bakehouse beneath the railway arches at London Fields

e5 began in 2010 with a clay oven in a railway arch and grew around sourdough, local grain and a willingness to teach what it learned. Its signature Hackney Wild loaf uses a rye starter and heritage wheat; the kitchen turns the bakery's bread and seasonal produce into breakfast, soup, a daily main and substantial sandwiches. You can come for coffee and a bun, but the fuller experience is lunch, a loaf for home and a look at the baking-school calendar.

The Dusty Knuckle, Abbot Street

Bread and pastries at The Dusty Knuckle

The original Dalston site still feels hidden even when you know where it is. Breakfast starts with pastries and bacon or egg sandwiches; lunch brings huge focaccia and sourdough sandwiches with fillings that change. The baking is serious, but the room is informal and the outdoor seats make sense on a bright day. The training programme for young people is part of the operation, not a slogan attached afterwards.

Pophams Victoria Park, Lauriston Road

Pophams is where to go when the pastry itself is the event. Alongside croissants and pain au chocolat are cardamom buns, bacon and maple pastries, and the Marmite, Schlossberger and spring onion combination that explains why queues form. The Victoria Park shop opens early every day and adds a changing lunch selection from late morning. Buy more than one pastry if you have walked any distance to get there; regret is more expensive.

Allpress London Roastery and Café, Dalston Lane

Allpress London Roastery and Café in Dalston

This restored joiner's factory is both café and working UK roastery. Espresso and single-origin filter are served beside breakfast plates, sandwiches and canteen-style lunches, while the roasting, packing and technical workshop remain visible from the room. The scale gives you space without making the place feel anonymous. If you are curious about coffee beyond the cup, book one of the home-brewing classes or a roastery tour.

Abney Park Cafe, Stoke Newington High Street

Abney Park Cafe by Sabel

Run by the local Sabel Food team, this café sits inside Abney Park and serves breakfast, brunch and lunch every day. The setting does some of the work, but the menu is ingredient-led rather than relying on the park to carry it. It is particularly useful for groups with children, for a quiet weekday breakfast, or as the beginning and end of a walk through the cemetery grounds.

46b Espresso Hut, Brooksby's Walk

46b Espresso Hut in Homerton

46b is the small neighbourhood counter on this list: coffee, a compact food offer and no attempt to turn the visit into a ceremony. It is tucked off the main road on Brooksby's Walk and closes after the weekday daytime trade, so check the hours before making a special journey. What it offers is the thing large coffee chains cannot manufacture — a room that belongs to the few streets around it.
